It's a property with a lot of history — and a lot of elevation.

Walker & Co Realty is marketing a property on Queenstown’s Crows Nest Rd, in the old Arthurs Point, that, 500 metres above sea level, offers remarkable views across the Whakatipu Basin as well as back to Lake Whakatipu.

Two options are on the market — the first option’s a renovated, high-end four-bedroom, five-bathroom home on just over three hectares, and the second option is both this home and an adjoining 75ha block, climbing to 900m, which has huge development potential, including one of New Zealand’s highest building platforms.

The north-facing land, with title going back to 1875, was first farmed by an Ellen Saunders, who had six kids and a husband who’d disappear for months at a time to go goldmining at Macetown.

A trail on the property provided access for goldminers, and one area was known as the ‘jewellery box’ as, in one creek, it was said you could pick out nuggets of gold after a storm.

The original home was built for longtime weather man, the late David Crow, who called it the ‘Crows Nest’, spurring council to name the road ‘Crows Nest Rd’ in 2007.

Walker & Co principal Hamish Walker says "it’s very special up there, like you feel a million miles away from everything".

Except at the same time you’re only 8km from Queenstown’s CBD and closer to town than the airport.

The property’s for sale by deadline sale, closing mid-next month.

The 2023 capital value for the smaller property was $6.07million, including $4.27m for the land value.
