Police are searching for two people who allegedly abandoned a critically injured woman following a Queenstown car crash.

It took about seven hours for the 22-year-old woman to be discovered on Wednesday, after the black Honda Odyssey she was a passenger in crashed on Gorge Rd at 4am.

The crash, at the rear of the Gorge Rd Retail Centre, was not discovered until 10.30am, when emergency services were called.

Sergeant Steve Watt said police believed two other people were in the car at the time of the crash.

The woman was extracted from the car about 11.15am and taken by ambulance to Lakes District Hospital. She was later transferred to Dunedin Hospital, and remained in a ''very critical condition'' yesterday, Sgt Watt said.

He said the woman did not appear to have been the driver of the car, and police were making inquiries into the whereabouts of the other occupants.
