Central Otago

Ranfurly picked up a much-needed win over Naseby in the final round-robin match of the Maniototo Eastern Districts season to put it in second place behind Palmerston heading into the semifinals this weekend. It was a low-scoring affair, Ranfurly 116 all out from 40 overs. Luke Steele was the best of the Ranfurly batsmen, making 32, while Tim Miller (24) and Raymond Hollows (20) contributed. Rex Gibson and Karl McDiarmid each picked up three wickets, Gibson conceding just six runs from his eight overs.

Naseby battled hard but was all out for 106. McDiarmid was the only real contributor with the bat, falling one short of his half century. But Hollows' bowling was the highlight of the match. The slow/medium bowler took eight for 18 off just 7.1 overs. He bowled straight and had four of his victims bowled, as well as three leg-before-wicket scalps.

• Gimmerburn beat Waikouaiti by five wickets to ensure it too would clinch a playoff spot for this weekend.

Waikouaiti, batting first, made just 96. Murray Dempster continued his freakish form making yet another half century to be the only batsman to impress. The wickets were shared around the Gimmerburn bowlers, Geoff Blakely and Cam Gray each taking three, with Matt Weir and Matt McSkimming taking two apiece. Blakely conceded just 11 runs from his eight overs. Gimmerburn reached the target comfortably, losing just five wickets in the process.

Weir was 26 not out, aided by Charlie Hore who scored 23.

Drew Campbell finished with three of the five Gimmerburn wickets. He had three for 27 from eight overs.

• Top qualifier Palmerston had the bye.

• Albion beat top-placed Cromwell by two wickets and defended the Burnett Shield in a Koford Cup match at Luggate.

The visitors batted first and scored 232 for nine from 50 overs, Regan Heal top-scoring with 70. Josh Underwood also batted well, scoring 61. Tom Gillespie (33) and Mark Knox (20) chipped in. Ross McGregor, three for 39, was the best of the Albion bowlers.

In reply, Albion lost eight wickets. The batting of Jonathan Homer and Cory Blair, who both scored 60, made the difference as did Richard McLeod (40 not out) .

Knox led the charge for Cromwell, taking three for 57.

• Alexandra had a seven-wicket win over Queenstown. Queenstown, the home side, batted first and was 191 all out.

Top scorer Ian Mannering made 46. Peter Breen was the best of the Alexandra bowlers with three for 35.

Andrew McGregor had a good match, top-scoring with 60 not out. Breen was also prominent with the bat, making 44, and Brendan Domigan scored 39 not out. Steve Devonshire took two of the three Alexandra wickets.

• Black Hills defaulted to Dunstan.

Bowls

In round 16 of the ECNZ Trophy, Clyde 3, Alexandra and RSA 2 all registered three wins. Three of the five Clyde teams, 1, 4 and 5, all failed to score a win. Alexandra W, five points clear of its nearest rival, is on 62 points.

In the West Zone, Queenstown leads Bannockburn and Wanaka by 3 and 6 points respectively.

North Otago

Union remains unbeaten in Borton Cup cricket with a nine-wicket win over St Kevin's College in the seventh round on Saturday. Valley moved into fourth equal with Albion with a seven-wicket win over Oamaru, while Albion beat Waitaki Boys' by 55 runs.

• St Kevin's decided to bat first against Union and after 11 overs was 32 for two. While Mike Seddon (34) was at the crease the school had some hope but Union bowlers Paul Johnston (four for 14) and Isaac Shields (three for 27) saw St Kevin's dismissed in the 39th over for 105.

An unbeaten 59 from opener Antony Cromwell, who was backed up by Todd (25), saw Union through to 106 for one.

• Oamaru batted first against Valley at Weston but only allrounder Gary Clearwater (54 not out) showed form as Oamaru slumped to be all out for 102. Nick Kelland took five for 12 off nine overs while Sean Todd claimed two for 24.

Solid innings from Dean Malcolm (34 not out) and Geoff Mavor (23 not out) carried Valley through to 103 for three, Clearwater taking three for 34 off his 10 overs.

• Waitaki Boys' asked Albion to bat first. A flourishing 86 from Chris Cunningham and 36 from Darren Shillito saw Albion make 235 before losing its 10th wicket in the 44th over. Sam Wicks impressed with four for 44 off 9.5 overs, while Riley Rooney took two for 41 off his 10 overs.

Lachie Kingan and Jake Greenslade(47) featured in an opening stand of 50. A determined Waitaki batted through its 50 overs to be 180 for nine at the end of the innings, Rooney (22) and Gordon Upton (22) adding valuable runs.

Ricky Whyte finished with three for 49, while Dylan Winter, Gareth Duncan and Scott Guyton took two wickets each.

Bowls

The mother and son team of Kerry and Pat Kelly won the Centre Mixed pairs final at the Maheno club yesterday to earn the right to represent North Otago in the regional playoffs.The Kellys won their first three rounds, beating Brenda Hope/Trevor Williams (19-7), Graeme and Joan Larcombe (19-10), and Graeme Sangster and Anne McDonald (12-8) before dropping a game to Rowan and Dorothy Breen (4-16). In yesterday's semi-finals, the Kellys beat Bob Wilson and Val Lee (11-6) and Bob and Daphne Campbell (13-6), who conceded after 10 ends.

Softball

Stephan Groblar and Tim McCormick, respectively coaches of the Waitaki Boys' High School and St Kevin's College First cricket XIs, were to the fore in softball last week, as top batters for Industries as it beat Rebels 21-9 in senior men's softball. McCormick hit a home run while Aaron Barton stood out with the bat for Rebels.

• Waitaki Boys' beat Kiwi Dodgers 21-9, scoring nine runs in its first turn at bat with Hayden James hitting a three-bagger. In reply, Dodgers scored only one run. Waitaki Boys' kept Dodgers scoreless until the eighth innings when Dodgers doubled its score.

Blayne Howe pitched his best game of the season with 10 strikeouts. Top batters were Luke McCabe (Waitaki Boys') and Phil Howe (Kiwi Dodgers).

Tennis

Hampden has a three-point lead in the Southern sub-association tennis competition with one round remaining.

Weston is two points behind.

The real battle will be among the bottom four with Oamaru, Herbert and Waimanui all on seven and Waikouaiti two behind.

• Hampden beat Herbert on Saturday with Nathan Caldwell, Paul McLennan and Beb Carter winning their singles and Hampden dominating all three doubles matches.

• Weston beat Oamaru 7-2 with Tony Read and Barry McDonald picking up Oamaru's wins in the singles.

But Weston was too strong, Leanne Mavor, Rob Aitken, Kathy Aitken and Dan Keno winning their singles matches.

• Waimanui beat Waikouaiti 5-4. Scott McEntee, Leith Thompson and Wendy Ritchie won their singles for Waikouaiti but it could win only one of the three doubles matches.

South Otago
- Norman Woods

Kaitangata showed good form on Saturday beating Lawrence in senior cricket.

Lawrence, batting first, was all out for 102. Best batters were Bryce Rishworth (26) and Mark Paterson (15). Bowling for Kaitangata, Oory Young was one for 18 from his eight overs, and Matt Herring two for 11.

Kaitangata replied with 103 without loss, Carmichael 56 not out and Mark Phillips 35 not out. Kaitangata also picked up a bonus point, with its runs being scored in 25 overs.

• Blueys (Tapanui) beat Owaka by 48 runs at Tapanui.

The home team, batting first, was 156 all out. Sean Tauti led the way with 29 and Michael Stuart made 27. Quentin Gare was the top bowler for Owaka, taking three for 13. In reply, Owaka was all out for 108, Jim Young (32) and Francis Parker (23) the main contributors.

Bowling for Bleuys, James Anderson took two for 25 and Chris Waide two for 16.

Bowls

Kaka Point has the men's interclub bowls competition for 2011-12 season, beating T and C 8-4 in the final round on Saturday. Neville Murdoch (2), Graeme Thomas and Ken Stephens scored wins for Kaka Point. For T and C, Bruce Campbell and Barrie Keach scored one win each.

• Balclutha beat Stirling 11-1. Blair Thomson and Tony Cook scored two wins each, with Darren Wolland picking up one win and a draw.

• Milton Blue recorded the biggest win of the day beating Waihola 12-0.

• Clinton beat Milton Gold 8-4. For Clinton, Alan Mathieson scored two wins, with Geoff Hurst and Les MacKenzie one win each. For Milton Gold, Colin Smith and Max Taylor one win each.

• Milton White and Kaitangata drew 6-6. For Milton White, Murray Grant scored two wins, with Kevin Anderson also gaining a win. For Kaitangata, Neville Twaddle, Stu Uren and Peter Brooks scored wins.

• Leader Finegand was surprisingly beaten by Stirling 24-13 in round 14 of the men's midweek competition. Finegand now holds a two-point lead from Kaka Point Orcas and Balclutha White.

• Kaka Point Orcas beat Clinton 18-13.

• Balclutha White beat Waihola 22-12.

• Bal Red scored an 18-15 win over Owaka.

• Kaka Point Seals had the biggest win of the day, beating Milton Saints 28-15.
