Division over plan to rename ridge

Opinion is divided over a proposal to rename South Ridge on Aoraki/Mt Cook in honour of Sir Edmund Hillary.

Public consultation closed yesterday and, by yesterday morning, it had attracted 115 submissions, with 52 objecting, 56 supporting and seven providing comment only.

The New Zealand Geographic Board recommended South Ridge be renamed Hillary Ridge, after Sir Edmund.

The board's secretariat will analyse the submissions "in due course", for consideration by the board when it meets next year.

A summary would be available at some time after that, board secretary Wendy Shaw said.
