Abby Ridgway (4), of Oamaru, winds up before competing in the gumboot toss at the Waimate Caledonian Games on Saturday.

Gumboot throwing proved to be one of the most popular children’s events throughout the day, and there were hundreds of people competing in events from Highland dancing to speed skating, track cycling and athletics at Victoria Park.

Waimate Caledonian Society secretary Bernie Blackgrove was delighted with the strong turnout, in perfect weather conditions.

"We’ve got kids out in the middle [doing athletics] and kids on the bikes — that’s what it’s all about," Mrs Blackgrove said.

"They love it all."

The Waimate Caledonian Games were the longest continually running Caledonian games in New Zealand.
