A severe thunderstorm warning has been lifted for parts of South Canterbury, but another has been issued for Hurunui, Selwyn and Christchurch city.
MetService earlier warned that areas including Timaru, Pareora and St Andrews could expect thunderstorms accompanied by "very heavy rain and large hail".
The forecaster said that 12:45pm its weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near those areas, and that they were moving towards the north-northeast.
In an update about 1.45pm MetService advised the warning had been lifted, but then issued the following one for areas further north about 1.55pm.
