1000 Riders expected

Up to 1000 off-road trail bike riders from all around the South Island will descend on Milton tomorrow, for the annual Lake to Sea trail ride.

The ride, known for its variety of terrain and great views, is the 12th annual major fundraiser for Tokomairiro High School.

Attracting entries from as far as Canterbury, Invercargill, Central Otago and the West Coast, the family day raises about $30,000 each year.

Tokomairiro High School Parent Teacher Association president Jennifer Pringle said the ride was organised by a group of enthusiastic parents, teachers and volunteers, led by organiser Brian Griffin.

Having planned and updated the course since the inaugural event in 2001, Mr Griffin has created a course this year for advanced riders and seniors covering up to 140km, from the start behind the Otago Corrections Facility at Milburn to Toko Mouth and return.

More farms have been included in this year's course and advanced riders will have a run along Chrystalls Beach.

The course includes a lunchtime stop at Bull Creek, where

packed lunches and a sausage sizzle will be on offer. A less-challenging course for juniors and less experienced riders covers about 80km.

Juniors (15 and under) are led and accompanied throughout the course, while riders under 12 are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Late registrations will be accepted on the day. There is a compulsory gear list and bikes will be scrutineered between 7.30am and 9.30am before they are able to start the course.

The first bikes are expected to leave between 9.30am and 10am.
