Dust, mud, and a good route kept riders happy and engaged as they rode the length of the annual Clinton-Kaiwera Trail Ride, near Clinton on Saturday.

Organiser Geoff Dodd said he was happy with the number of rider who turned out, saying the 440 motorcyclists enjoyed an excellent day.

However, at least five people were injured - ranging from broken wrists and ankles to a broken femur - with three flown by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter for treatment.

The event is an annual fundraiser for the Clinton Primary School and this year involved 10 properties.

Two trails, each of about 40km, were suitable for intermediate riders and there were additional marked areas for advanced riders.

For junior to experienced riders and ATVs there was a 20km trail, while a ''pee-wee'' trail kept younger riders occupied.

The ride has been held for many years, initially as a fundraiser for Kaiwera School, until that school closed in 2008.

Mr Dodd said last year's event raised $12,000 for the school.
