All in readiness for Jailbreak

South Otago will be the site of another great bike escape this weekend, with the Milton Jailbreak on Sunday.

The Milton Karate Club's annual Milton Jailbreak, named because of its proximity to the Otago Corrections Facility at Milburn, starts at 10am.

Publicity officer Faola de Montgomery said the event had grown in popularity since it began seven years ago as a simple cycling and walking event.

Organisers created the "jailbreak" to provide a more challenging event after demand from mountain bikers in 2006.

Ms de Montgomery said the club worked with forest companies to provide the kind of terrain riders were looking for.

"There's a range of terrain with wonderful views, and a nice straight at the end," she said.

The event follows the same course as last year, with some minor changes.

The Jailbreak features three separate events on the same course - a 50km race, 34km recreational ride, and a 10km family ride.

Late registrations on the day will incur a $5 fee.

A prizegiving will be held at 12.30pm back at the starting point - the paddock next to the Toko Golf Course.
