West Otago residents will end their wait for the first Anzac Day dawn service in Tapanui in memory by spending the night under the stars.

The commemorations begin on Friday, April 24, at 7pm at the West Otago A&P Showgrounds.

Tents, trailers, swags and people in loungers and sleeping bags are expected to fill the grounds for a full night of live music, speakers, barbecues and movies.

Organiser Vicki Adams said West Otago Remembers was about respect for all those who had fought for New Zealand, but special thought would be given to those soldiers who fought at Gallipoli.

The night was planned for the community ''just really to show some solidarity''.

''And taking a little bit of time out of our modern lives to experience just a tiny little bit of what the diggers experienced in Gallipoli,'' she said.

''It's about saying, yes, it is going to be cold and, yes, we are asking you to stay up all night ... but we've had a really amazing response from the community.''

All four local schools and West Otago residents would perform, and at intervals speakers would talk about topics ranging from

historical accounts of battles to the role of the modern soldier.

''It's not only about Gallipoli, it's about anybody who's fought ... and showing that we're grateful to live in New Zealand.''
