Balclutha house fire thought suspicious

A north Balclutha house was gutted by fire last night.

The Fire Service was called to a Yarmouth St property shortly after 8pm.

Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade Acting Chief Fire Officer Terry Michie said about 25 firefighters and three appliances from Balclutha and Kaitangata spent an hour extinguishing the blaze.

When emergency services arrived, no-one was inside the house.

Mr Michie said the fire was being treated as suspicious.

A fire safety officer would be at the scene this morning to investigate the cause.
