Better radio bid

Balclutha's two radio stations are being lobbied by the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board to provide coverage into Lawrence.

Although the town has a privately-owned radio station, Goldfields Radio, the board said it did not cover local events or include items of interest like cancellations, road closures and other weather-affected news.

In a letter to Big River Radio and Radio Clutha, board member and Lawrence-Tuapeka ward councillor Geoff Blackmore said the few locals who listened to the existing station in Lawrence did so "through lack of other options rather than by choice". Because the town was in a valley, it generally had poor radio reception, he said.

The board wondered whether either or both of the Balclutha stations would be interested in extending their signal to Lawrence.

"From feedback received, the board is sure that if such a radio station was available, it would be tuned into by a good percentage of people in the area."
