The story of the Catlins will be communicated to visitors through an assortment of information kiosks and interpretation panels appearing around the tourist hot-spot over the next decade, a plan launched recently recommends.

Tourism Catlins chose to unveil the plan at popular Surat Bay, which will be one of dozens to get either a kiosk or panel over the next 10 years, at an estimated cost of $142,000.

The document wants the rollout of information to go under the banner "Rugged Nature" as the Catlins prepares for a forecast doubling of visitors in the next decade.

The plan was borne out of the five-year-old Catlins Tourism Strategy which recommended developing consistent interpretation signs and information for visitors.

The interpretation plan itself was a year in the planning.

Tourism Catlins trustee Fergus Sutherland said interpretation was "telling our stories in meaningful and interesting ways".

The group's projects co-ordinator, Kim Dodds, said it was proud to launch the plan and was looking forward to starting on the first recommendations - to develop entry kiosks at southern and northern ends of the area.

The report believes interpretation panels, in the first instance, are the most available, observed and widespread method of delivering information to visitors.

"With an increasing number of visitors forecasted, more pressure on the fragile natural environment and wildlife is inevitable. Interpretation panels and off-site interpretation will assist in educating visitors on the appropriate behaviour and give them a sense of being part of preserving this unique area," the plan reads.

Directional and information signs are not included.

It focuses on interpretative panels and information kiosks with the aim of the entire Catlins having the same information available.
