The $5 million Cross Recreation Centre is becoming a feature of the Balclutha landscape, as work on the complex progresses at the Glasgow St site.

Balclutha community co-ordinator Irene Mosley said the complex would be operating by the end of the year.

"It's been six years of campaigning and planning, and to see it all come together is wonderful. The way the community has got in behind the project has been great."

The fundraising target of $850,000 set last November has been met through gifts and pledges, enabling all parts of the building contract to be "locked in", she said.

The open day held two months ago raised $1200, and about $10,000 was raised at the Highlanders versus Blues game at the end of January.

Mrs Mosley said more sports clubs had become interested in being a long-term part of the complex after the open day in April.

Dynapoint rubber and polyurethane surfacing would be used for the centre's floors, and fundraising would continue to cover future operating costs.

Clutha Recreation Centre Inc announced in April that the complex was named the Cross Recreation Centre to acknowledge a large donation by Balclutha businessman Blair Cross.
