Clutha recycling considered

Recycling options for Clutha will be included in this year's review of the district's long-term council community plan (LTCCP), but details of their cost will be kept under wraps until the plan is released.

The Clutha District Council has been holding private workshops involving staff and councillors which consider the range of issues to be addressed in the first LTCCP review.

The review will look at what the council is likely to do over the coming decade.

Recycling was a hot topic during last year's annual plan hearings, with several groups and individuals asking the council to investigate options and introduce some form of recycling as soon as possible.

Those people may get their wish soon.

But council chief executive Charles Hakkaart said staff would need to study the costs and all the options before recommending what - if any - option was the best for the community.

"We are still looking at all the options, how much they might cost and everything else that we need to know," he said.

This process had only recently started for councillors, and Mr Hakkaart said they needed to "get their heads around" all the options and costings before details would be released publicly.

"It's early days yet. We're still looking at . . . a whole lot of issues that will be included in the draft plan."

The council expects the draft LTCCP to be released for submissions in late February or early March.

It has scheduled a meeting to hear submissions on May 14. The revised LTCCP will be adopted, with any changes, at a council meeting on June 18.
