Community patrols - where residents help act as the eyes and ears for police - will start around Balclutha streets at the end of this month.

A group of 12 volunteers, including Clutha Mayor Juno Hayes, have held training sessions in preparation for the October 31 debut.

Balclutha community co-ordinator Irene Mosley said a "diverse" range of locals had come forward to join the patrols, which were prompted after a series of incidents around the town in recent months.

The Balclutha group has become affiliated to the Community Patrols New Zealand organisation and is keen to help play a part in keeping local crime down.

While the group had enough members to start, Mrs Mosley said it was keen to attract more volunteers.

Anyone interested in joining the patrol needed to undergo a police check and sign a confidentiality agreement.

The enthusiasm among the initial group was very high, she said.

Patrols would be staged on Friday and Saturday nights.

The patrols have the backing of local police, with Sergeant Martin Bull saying the patrol will be of "real assistance to us" and give police another set of eyes and ears.

"There are only so many police and we are limited to where we can be and what we can see, so to have this group out on patrol will be of great benefit, I'm sure."

Sgt Bull was the police liaison officer for a similar patrol in Otaki for four years and said it worked very well and was of great help to police.

Balclutha community constable Tom Taylor will be the police liaison officer for the Balclutha patrols.
