Phillip Richmond and his family were left devastated by the fire that badly damaged his mother's Wyre St house last Thursday, but they have also been uplifted by the efforts of Kaitangata and Districts Promotions, which yesterday launched a community appeal.
Co-ordinator Jean Proctor said the town was keen to do anything it could to help the family recover from their loss.
"We would like to invite the community to donate items that may be of use to them," she said.
Most needed were double beds, kitchen utensils, a dining table and chairs, but other items would be welcome as well.
"Anything that people may not need anymore would be much appreciated," she said.
The fire, believed to have started in the bathroom, almost totally destroyed the property. It was not considered suspicious.
Mr Richmond, who lived in the house with his son, was devastated.
"There are so many memories, some dating back to the First World War, that are all gone. It's pretty hard."
He was humbled by the group's efforts: "I'm very grateful and a bit embarrassed, but it shows the community spirit here."
Anyone wanting to donate items can leave them at the promotions group office at 17 Eddystone St or contact Mrs Proctor or Michelle Ramsay on (03) 413-9769.
