Event co-ordinator Amanda Hyslop, of Warepa Primary School, said the idea for a South Otago primary schools tournament was first pitched at the end of last year.
Since then a committee was formed to organise the event for which primary schools in the Clutha district and South Otago were invited to take part.
Sixteen teams of year 5 and 6 pupils from 10 schools darted across the Cross Recreation Centre netball courts vying for the title.
In the end, the two teams entered by Warepa Primary School placed first and second.
The two other teams in the semifinals were St Mary’s School, of Milton, and Clutha Valley Primary School.
Mrs Hyslop said she was proud of the two Warepa teams which had to play against one another in the final.
"They’ve done really well for a small school and only a week and a-half of practice."
She said the day was a huge success.
"There were lots of positive comments about kids out there having fun and learning some new skills that they don’t usually get to do on a rugby field or a soccer field."
The tournament continues today for 10 teams of years 7 and 8 pupils from nine schools.
