Health providers sought

The Southern District Health Board has called for expressions of interest from health providers wanting to be based at Lakes District Hospital, as the DHB implements National Health Board recommendations.

To determine the future of Wakatipu health services, a National Health Board-appointed panel last year recommended the Frankton hospital be retained and expanded. Expressions of interest close on June 15, with participants notified of the outcome on August 24.

Southern DHB funding and finance general manager Robert Mackway-Jones said final time frames depended on what providers came forward.

Once expressions of interest were in, the DHB could start planning the future of the 2.8ha site.

Opportunity existed for public and private health providers, he said. Possible health services included general practice, pharmacies, and private surgical providers.

The site includes the 36-bedroom rest-home for which the DHB is trying to find a new provider in a separate process, which has closed.

Mr Mackway-Jones said the DHB was keen to see hospital-level beds and dementia care developed, and the aged residential care services would be integrated with other services.
