Milton Elder Care is not slowing down despite a busy year collecting a Community Services award in July, and turning 30 in August.
The independent senior citizens club was the combined winner of Clutha District Council’s award for health and wellbeing.
Last Tuesday it was saddling up for a cafe outing to Lawrence.
"There are about 20 clients, and 20 trust members and volunteers," Care chairwoman Heather Mills said.
"Today about 25 of us are heading over to Lawrence for a cafe luncheon, and see about a walk afterwards.
"I first started with Milton Elder Care as a volunteer about 15 years ago when I moved from Dunedin.
"That was how I met everybody and soon found out that if you needed a bit of help or advice on anything, a group like this there’ll be someone who knows just the person and phone number to put you in touch with."
A council spokesperson said Milton Elder Care had demonstrated "exceptional commitment to enhancing the health and wellbeing of our community’s elderly population".
"What sets them apart is their extraordinary team of volunteers, who generously contribute their time and resources to ensure these activities thrive."
The group has premises at 185 Union St Milton and meets from 10.30am-4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for activities including picnics, card games, housie, dining out and live entertainment.
Volunteer Colleen Mackie said she was standing by to assist new members with the support they could apply for to get involved.
"We’re often busy with our own fundraising to supplement members’ support, and it’s those sponsors and all the volunteers who make what we do possible.
"Every now and then we remind ourselves Elder Care is an acronym: Companionship, Activities, Recreation and Education.
"I think we’re doing a pretty good job fulfilling that, whether its for an outing like today’s or if we all just get together here for a movie night with our big new screen."
