About 380 people took part in the 23rd annual Moeraki fishing contest run by the Waianakarua Lions club on Saturday.

Numbers were slightly down on last year, Moeraki Fishing contest co-ordinator Geoff Herbert, of Hampden, said.

Last year organisers launched about 100 boats for the contest, while this year there were about 90, plus other vessels already in the harbour.

A heavy fog over Moeraki in the morning, weather predictions of a southwest change later and the Warbirds over Wanaka may have contributed to the reduction in numbers, he said.

Several people fished from moored boats in the Moeraki bay area, Mr Herbert said.

The amount raised by the Waianakarua Lions club for the hospices in Oamaru and Dunedin had not yet been totalled last night.

The $1000 prize from the draw went to Stuart Vanderweg, of Ashburton.

The Toby Thomas Memorial Trophy for the skipper with a mystery weight of two to five blue cod caught from his boat was awarded to Gavin Te Maiharoa.

Mr Thomas was a well known commercial fisherman in the Moeraki area.

Fish of all varieties all over the Clutha District were in peril at the weekend, as 201 anglers, who included 61 children, cast lines into the sea and rivers and dug shellfish from the sand in the 11th annual Nugget Point easter fishing contest.

Nugget Point Recreational Fishing Club president Graeme Sutherland said the family-oriented recreational fishing contest was open to both fresh water and salt water anglers.

"It's designed for the kids, and the kids love it," he said.

The youngest entrant in this year's competition, Caleb Jones (2), of Timaru, caught his fish at Taieri Mouth on Sunday.

His father, Ward Jones, of Kaka Point, said catching the fish, a yellow-eyed mullet, was all Caleb's effort.

"He used a worm and a pole.

He dug the worm and he caught the fish."

Mr Sutherland said a lot of trumpeter and sharks were weighed in, along with some blue cod, barracouta, trout and Jock Stewart (sea perch).

"We've even had some salmon entered," he said.

The prize for heaviest fish caught went to Derek Paterson, of Romahapa, with a 26.7kg shark.
