Joyride in logging truck has pair facing charges

Two Invercargill men face charges after a logging truck was taken on a 50km joyride on Tuesday night.

Senior Constable Murray Hewitson, of Owaka, said two men broke into the smoko room of a transport yard in East Taieri, taking the keys to a ''fully laden'' logging truck and trailer.

The pair drove the truck about 50km south on State Highway 1, before abandoning the truck and trailer on Stony Creek Rd, about 6km north of Balclutha, Snr Const Hewitson said.

The Mack logging truck was found at 5am, and the two men were found hitchhiking to Invercargill several hours later.

The truck's clutch and engine were damaged.

Two Invercargill men, aged 20 and 23, were arrested about 10am yesterday, and face charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, burglary, theft from a vehicle, and breaching bail.
