South Otago children received rugby tips first-hand when members of the Highlanders came to Clydevale yesterday.

Jimmy Cowan, Nasi Manu and Josh Bekhuis were among the eight Highlanders visiting Clutha Valley Primary School yesterday, running an hour-long coaching session.

Clutha Valley Primary School principal Val Ward joined pupils decked out in Otago colours, donning a blue wig and Highlanders flag.

"It's been a real buzz having the Highlanders here," she said.

The training sessions were organised by rural retailers Combined Rural Traders Co-operative (CRT), which chose one South Otago school and a rugby club in North Otago.

CRT southern regional manager Harry Soper said the company was proud to make the session available to rural children.

The school held a mufti day for pupils to dress in Otago colours, the proceeds going to support the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter.

In North Otago, the Valley Rugby Club hosted five of the Highlanders in Weston yesterday, running an hour-long coaching session for 9- to 12-year-olds from the Valley, Maheno, Union and Kurow rugby clubs.

Each child received a free rugby ball as part of coaching sessions in both areas.
