As a follow up to the article by Rachel Taylor on Kaitangata (Saturday 23 January - "Fire treated as suspicious".
A visitor from Auckland, I had visited Kaitangata for the first time on the evening of Wednesday 20 January and was fascinated by the history and the old buildings and miner's cottages.
As I left the town to head back to Balclutha where I was staying I stopped to photograph the lovely old store on the corner of Water and Exmouth Street. To my suprise and disappointment I read in Saturday's ODT while in Wanaka that the old shop had been burned to the ground.
I have attached the photo that I took.
It is such a tradegy to be losing these old buildings...I hope that some local photographer is documenting the old buildings for future historians or interested party to see what they were like at various stages of their lifetimes.
