Some of the country's top axemen will converge on Waihola tomorrow, to compete in a new timber sports competition.
Mosgiel-based timber sports newcomer Gary Gutsell has helped organised the Stihl Shop Milton Timber Sports event which will be held at the Lake Waihola Cafe and Bar from 11.30am to 5pm tomorrow.
A forestry contractor, Mr Gutsell first became involved in timber sports six months ago.
"We have a lot of family history with the sport. My father has been involved for years, and I have cousins and second cousins who also compete."
The Waihola event was created to encourage interest in timber sports among members of the public. Entry is free.
Events open to the public include nail driving and some sawing events, such as Jack and Jill, at the end of the meet.
"New Zealand has the best timber-sports action in the world. We've got a top quality field with half a dozen top axemen from Southland coming up," Mr Gutsell said.
Categories are chainsaw racing, axe throwing, sawing events, large underhand, large standing, small underhand, and small standing.
