New birch trees for avenue

The avenue of trees which greets visitors to Lawrence will get a makeover next month.

Under a replanting programme initiated by the Tuapeka Lawrence Community Company, birch trees will be planted at the town's southern entrance.

Several of the established trees were pruned or removed last year, leaving gaps along the road that leads into the town.

Now, the community company, with help from the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board, New Zealand Transport Agency and local volunteers, has confirmed several trees will be planted.

A white spire birch tree species has been chosen, described by the community company as "a graceful, upright, small type of birch that displays white stems and will provide a colourful autumn accent while the narrow canopies will allow ample light and sun to the adjacent properties".

The group will plant the trees during the last weekend of August.
