Bargain hunters and book lovers have thousands of books to choose from at the Rotary book sale in Balclutha this week.

Balclutha Rotarian and book sale convener Peter Geddes (above) said late nights had been introduced this year after requests from the public.

Last night, the sale was open until 10pm and would be again tomorrow night to give everyone a chance to ''nab a bargain''.

The sale ''started with a bang'' on Monday, Mr Geddes said.

Thousands of books on a wide range of subjects were on offer, and he considered the club fundraiser to be useful for recycling and redistributing books.

With four or five book sales under his belt as convener, he had noticed a change in reading habits because of the introduction of electronic reading devices such as ''Kindles'' and ''e-readers'', Mr Geddes said.

He believed fewer people were reading books, and several book customers backed up his theory as they dropped more books off at the sale.

Mr Geddes is pictured checking some of the books available at the Balclutha War Memorial Hall on Tuesday.
