No plans to review Albert Town speed limit

The New Zealand Transport Agency will monitor a 70kmh zone at Albert Town but has no plans to drop the speed to 50kmh, Central Otago area manager John Jarvis said.

The NZTA recently approved an 18-lot subdivision by John Young's family trust, which includes creating a new intersection with State Highway 6 in the 70kmh zone.

A right-turning centre lane will be created for north-bound traffic travelling from Mt Iron towards the Clutha River bridge.

The access will be called Jack Young Place.

It will be offset from two intersections on the opposite side of the highway, at Ash Ave and Alison Ave.

New speed limits of 80kmh and 70kmh were recently imposed at the Mt Iron turn-off and Albert Town, respectively.

They are connected by a short stretch of 100kmh zone.

Albert Town Residents Association president Bryan Lloyd last week said residents were concerned about speeds through town and he believed there would be support for reducing the 70kmh zone to 50kmh.

The association had spoken to NZTA representatives about the Allison Ave intersection, the Clutha River single-lane bridge and the Mt Iron turn-off from Wanaka-Luggate Highway and intended to keep on top of the issues, Mr Lloyd said.

Mr Jarvis said the new access had gone through a safety review and been approved by NZTA planners.

"The more access points, the more conflicts we have so we try to have a high standard of intersections and we try to minimise them," he said.

The agency would be "keeping an eye on" the intersections, speeds, traffic movements and pedestrian activity.

"If in time it does get a lot busier, we will review the situation. It is possible in time it may have to be reduced to 50kmh.

"And the section that is 100kmh, that is a short section and doesn't have any issues at the moment.

"But is it possible that may have to be reduced to 80kmh," Mr Jarvis said.
