Police release dead inmate’s name

Police yesterday released the name of the inmate who died at Otago Corrections Facility (OCF) on Tuesday.

He was 29-year-old David Joseph Jackson.

Jackson was sentenced to 22 months' jail in June 2014, for the burglary of the Burnside Service Station and unlawfully getting into a stolen motor vehicle in October 2013.

He was also ordered to pay $3417.30 reparation and was to be under standard release conditions for six months after his sentence ended.

Jackson was jointly charged with Gavin John McCormick in relation to the incident.

McCormick had stolen a Subaru WRX before the burglary and injured Jackson when he drove the vehicle carelessly after the burglary.

Jackson was treated for abrasions and a suspected fractured skull.

OCF prison director Jack Harrison said on Tuesday staff found Jackson in an unresponsive state and provided medical attention, but he was pronounced dead.

The death - the second in two months at the prison after a man in his 30s died there in November - had been referred to the coroner.

It was being investigated by the prison inspectorate and police.
