Southern school pupils relished getting the chance to prove they have what it takes to be a police recruit by taking the Police Competency Training challenge in Balclutha last week.

The annual Blue Light Physical Competency Test (PCT) Kids' Challenge was held at the Cross Recreation Centre.

Kaitangata Primary School pupil Aimee Johnson (11) is pictured clambering over a fence during one of the challenges. Behind the fence is teammate Oriyah Tipa.

The school pupils, competing in teams of four, completed the same PCT course individual serving police officers are required to do every two years.

There were 28 teams entered from South Otago and Gore primary schools.

School community officer constable Rochelle Gordon, of Balclutha, said the day

gave the children a ''taste'' of what they could do as a police officer.

Some of the obstacles included pushing trailers, lifting tyres, walking on a beam, leaping over a ditch, hurdle jumping, climbing through a window and over a wall as well as sprinting exercises.

The teams competed for the Lis Bartlett Memorial Trophy. Const Gordon said Rosebank Primary School took home the trophy.
