Serious crash on Clinton Highway

An Otago Regional Rescue helicopter is transporting a critically-injured person to Dunedin Hospital after a two-car crash near Clinton about 5pm.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the helicopter had taken off about 15 minutes ago to take the person to the hospital.

Volunteer firefighters and other emergency services were sent to the crash at Waiwera South, about 13kms from Clinton, and the highway was reported blocked.

The police serious crash unit had been called in, and one person had been seriously injured, a police spokeswoman said.

Further details of injuries and possible use of a rescue helicopter were not immediately available.
