Owaka artist Janine Thompson holds her Raven work, on display at the Owaka Museum and Information Centre as part of her "Flights of Fancy" art collection.

She said the embroidered piece was inspired by the birds of myth  which she believed had given ravens an undeserved reputation.

"This guy was my expression of the spirit of the raven in the hope of getting people thinking about them a bit more."

Mrs Thompson was having her own exhibition for the first time, at the information centre.

She said she was taking inspiration and ideas from native New Zealand wildlife and from the garden at her house.

"A lot of the butterflies and the native birds you see in the exhibition, we have around our home," she said.

Her work features embroidered cushions, mini-sculptures and sewn objects.

She learned many of her sewing skills from her mother and grandmother.

Art was a way for her to express herself, she said.

The works are on display until November 5.
