Balclutha police are investigating the third car theft in a week after another car was taken in Balclutha yesterday, and a second vehicle tampered with.

Senior Constable Tom Taylor, of Balclutha, said a red Holden Commodore sedan was taken from Stevenson St, in north Balclutha, about 4am yesterday.

The theft followed an incident in Lewin St in Rosebank on Monday night when a woman yelled at two men believed to be taking her car, scaring them off.

Police have a suspect, and are seeking any sightings of a Caucasian man of medium build with brown hair and grey eyes.

He possibly had a goatee. Snr Const Taylor said he believed the suspect was not a South Otago man and was in his mid-20s but looked older, and was balding.

Invercargill police recovered a white Subaru station wagon taken from Malcolm Tce in the Rosebank area last Tuesday night. A 25-year-old Invercargill man was arrested after he allegedly tried to sell the car to a scrap-metal dealer.

Police are still seeking information on two other incidents in the Rosebank area.

Late on Saturday or on Sunday morning, a silver Daihatsu Applause was taken from a Lewin St driveway. Snr Const Taylor said a traffic complaint was made about the Daihatsu about 8.30am on Sunday, north of Balclutha.

Two utility vehicles parked in Edinburgh Pl were broken into on Saturday night and items taken.
