Clinton millennium book committee chairwoman Rona Barnett catches up on the recently launched Clinton - Our Story.
An ambitious project, detailing the history of the Clinton community and the people within it, was launched recently, more than eight years after work on it began.

Clinton - Our Story is a 320-page publication that looks at the origins of the South Otago township, and also focuses on the many families who have comprised the community over the years.

Book committee chairwoman Rona Barnett said several present and former residents had been involved in putting the book together.

It officially began in 2000 as a millennium project for the community.

While the committee had not worked full-time on the book over the eight years, each member had put in considerable effort over that time.

"One good thing is now I won't have to answer the question of what year the book will be coming out," Mrs Barnett said.

No official history of Clinton had ever been tackled, and the community had shown its support by contributing photographs, stories and information.

Many local families had also contributed their own stories and history.

Mrs Barnett said Clinton was once a vibrant area, but the losses of its railway and Post Office services had severely affected the town.

The book launch was held at the Clinton Community Centre, with guest speakers Clinton ward councillor John Cochrane, and Bill Milburn, who served on the book committee.

Copies of the book can be bought for $60 each by contacting Mrs Barnett on (03) 4157 723.
