Teen pair face charges over firearms theft

Two Milton teenagers who allegedly stole a cache of firearms from a rural property near Balclutha yesterday are scheduled to appear in the Youth Court in Dunedin to answer burglary charges.

Senior Constable Blair Corlet, of Clinton, said the two 16-year-old boys would be held in police custody last night after their arrest yesterday.

Police had recovered three rifles and a shotgun from a Milton property, along with electronic items allegedly taken by the pair.

The guns and ammunition rounds were taken from a locked safe at a rural property in Inch Clutha yesterday morning, Const Corlet said.

"They located a key to the gun-safe and took the firearms. They also stole several items of electronic equipment," he said.

The boys had been charged with burglary and were scheduled to appear in the Youth Court in Dunedin today, Const Corlet said.
