Television contestant to heat up Lawrence events

Sue Drummond, a finalist in last year's Masterchef New Zealand television programme, will be starting what promises to be an exciting weekend of food, fast cars and Bavarian fun in Lawrence.

Ms Drummond will give a cooking demonstration and talk at the Waitahuna Hall tomorrow, beginning at 7.30pm.

She is appearing at the Lawrence Festival of Food, which is part of the Lawrence Summer Arts Festival.

On Saturday drivers entering the Lawrence Rally will have their finely-tuned machines on public display in Ross Pl, before the five-stage rally begins at Clarkes Flat, at 11am.

Prizegiving is at the Coach and Horses Inn, at 4.30pm.

Lawrence organiser Bill Bazley said the event was in its third year, and the Otago Sports Car Club expected about 40 cars to enter.

Proceeds would be givento the Lawrence St John ambulance centre.

On Saturday night, the committee raising funds towards building a new swimming pool in Lawrence, is holding its first event.

The Bavarian beer festival begins at 7pm, at Simpson Park, and will include a best-dressed Bavarian contest, entertainment from the Oompah Band and a courtesy coach.

The committee is raising funds towards the $1.9 million needed to replace the old Lawrence swimming pool, built in 1935, which leaks and is difficult to heat.
