Registrations are ''going well'' for the Catlins Great Escape coastal walk in February, Catlins Coast Incorporated projects co-ordinator Kim Dodds says.

The walk will be held on February 15 in the south Catlins - along the coastline from Otara to Weirs Beach.

Mrs Dodds it was the first time the walk had included this area; most of the route was on private land.

The walk would feature rugged coastline, with participants walking along remote beaches, coastline clifftops, through native bush and over farmland.

It would also feature the South Island's southernmost point, Slope Point.

The Department of Conservation will also open the Waipapa Point lighthouse for the event.

The Catlins Great Escape Bike Journey is scheduled for April 12 and 13, with registrations now open.
