Clutha's rural women are being urged to clear their calendars for mid to late May and indulge once again in an event designed for them.

The 2009 Clutha District Week for Women will feature celebrities, dancing, cooking and the chance for rural women to try their hand at everything from abseiling and fishing to self-defence and skeet-shooting.

Co-ordinator Nyree Dickie said tickets for the popular event went on sale yesterday. The week will start on May 16 with the Dancing With Our Stars event, featuring 10 identities who have spent the past few months learning a dance they will perform live in the Balclutha War Memorial Hall.

Those donning tuxedos and ballgowns will include Clutha Mayor Juno Hayes, his deputy, Hamish Anderson, former Otago rugby player Richard Knight, community constable Tom Taylor and pharmacist Ngaire Taylor.

At the other end of the week, at the final official event, organisers have secured award-winning actress Robyn Malcolm to speak at a dinner on May 22.

The star of television's Outrageous Fortune is expected to prove popular.

Another highlight of the week is expected to be celebrity chef Richard Till, who will stage a cooking demonstration on Thursday, May 21.

Mrs Dickie said the rest of the week would be filled with a variety of events.

A popular event in the past, The Be You Days, are back, with organisers, mindful of the tough economic climate, offering a series of programmes aimed at giving women the skills to save money in their households.

To be held at various venues, the day will feature topics like feeding a family on a budget, making jams and preserves, how to build your own vegetable garden and knitting beanies.

Other events during the week would include: a series of "Have A Go" sports days run by Sport Clutha, with activities including lawn bowls, croquet, abseiling, tai chi, and fishing.
