The first all-female team to take part in a marathon power boat race on Lake Waihola intends to give the male crews a run for their money.
The seventh round of the New Zealand Boat Marathon series will be held on Waihola this weekend and Dunedin resident Jane Spencer will be one of an all-female team competing.
While women often raced as co-pilots, this was the first time a team was made up entirely of women.
The eight-round series features seven classes of power boats.
Ms Spencer and her driving companion, Amber Horrell, were already placed second in the series so far.
Their E-class boat was powered by a 135hp motor and usually reached a maximum speed of 100kmh.
Their rival, John Weild, was leading.
Despite the competition, she was grateful of the support from other competitors.
''Because I'm obviously very new to the sport they've always got tips to help us out.''
Sometimes people could join a sport as an entire female crew and feel isolated, which was not the case in boating.
She was a member of the Milton Boat Club along with her father, race convener Ian Spencer, who encouraged her to take part.
''Dad has kind of co-driven with me a few times to get me confident, so our goal this season was to go to every single race.''
Race events start at 11am on Saturday.
The eighth and final marathon will be held on the Oreti River estuary, near Invercargill.
