Fire crews were called to a Riverton house this afternoon after someone's Christmas lunch cooking went awry.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said initially crews from three stations headed to the smokey scene at around noon but two were sent back.

While he could not comment on how extensive the damage was, he said, "hopefully the people's lunch wasn't ruined."

He said this was not an odd occurrence, particularly at Christmas, but all year around as people leave their cooking unattended.

His advice was to not leave food while it is cooking.

The house was ventilated and the crew had left by around 12.45pm.
