An event in Invercargill this weekend drew crowds on two and four legs.

Healthy Pets New Zealand put on the second edition of its Dogs Day Out with a full day of activities, demonstrations and entertainment for dogs and their owners.

Chairwoman and organiser Catherine Watson was pleased with the turnout as many family community events were not suitable for people to take their pets.

"It is a family-fun dogs’ day out for people to bring the whole family — including their dogs.

"People have a chance to come down and have some fun while learning all things dog related," she said.

Health Pets NZ supports, researches and practises to improve health and welfare for pets.

The event included demonstrations from Southland Training Club that offers training on dog obedience and agility, as well from the Southland Sled Dog Association.

"It is a great opportunity for people to know and make connections with the region’s dog clubs and businesses."

Invercargill resident Rachael Chittock took dogs Basil and Willow to the event.

"I wanted to give them some exposure so they can get used to other dogs.

"It is important for them to learn how to socialise with other dogs," she said.

The two-day event also included a bark run and educational seminars.
