Firefighters put out feedstock blaze

Firefighters worked for more than 16 hours to fully extinguish a large fire which tore through an Invercargill palm kernel storage warehouse.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) received reports of the fire at Freight Haulage storage in Lake St on Thursday about 4.30pm.

Staff were evacuated and the billowing thick black smoke could be seen from kilometres away.

On Friday morning, two crews were on site to dampen hot spots after the fire, which at its peak was being fought by 40 firefighters using nine fire trucks.

A Fenz spokesman said yesterday the fire was extinguished in the afternoon and crew were helping owners with demolition of the building’s side walls to enable access.

"It is in the hands of the company now. We are just helping to monitor things," he said.

HW Richardson Group chief executive Anthony Jones, whose company owns the building, said only one person was at the building at the time of the incident.

Fortunately, he was outside the shed working on a front loader, he said.

He said the building was one of the newest on the site and the company was still investigating the financial impact of the fire.

"It is a significant impact for our business. We still in the process of quantifying the damage and the loss of product to our customer."

He said this had been one of the biggest priorities as tonnes of palm kernel had been stored in the building and it was a very important feedstock.

"Our main focus now is how we work with supply in the areas and our customers and I am proud to say that we’ve been able to do that."

Mr Jones thanked the firefighters and said he was thankful no-one had been injured.

"Our main concern was to protect our people and protect the community around."
