Funds benefit arts events

Key arts-related events in and around Gore have been given a financial boost, with $7000 distributed.

The Creative Communities New Zealand Assessment Committee, linked with the Gore District Council, recently decided to allocate money to 10 groups.

The Eastern Southland Gallery received the single largest grant, of $2000, to stage four art exhibitions celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The other sizeable allocations were both of $1500 and went to the Gore Operatic Society to help stage its production of Jesus Christ Superstar this winter and the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards, to be held in late July.

Other grants included:Hokonui Horizons Community Networking Trust ($200 to stage a multicultural event to support Race Relations Day); Combined Country Music Clubs ($600 to stage a music festival); Southern Reap ($200 for Mataura children's art classes); Knapdale School ($300 for its musical production); Gore Dancesport Supporters Group ($500 to attend the Southland Festival of Dance); Mataura Kilties Pipe Band ($100 for drum tutor fees); Southland Competitions Society ($100 for its annual dance festival).
