She has come to be known as the Nattering Knitter but the Gore woman behind the special "hug rugs'' being sent off to those in need is humble in her work and grateful for what others are doing to help.

Caroline Dore has knitted over 200 rugs for the homeless and refugees.

Yesterday, as part of the Gold Guitar Awards, she went out busking to sing about the special blankets she makes for those in need.

"I sing a song saying I'm sitting in my knitting chair . . . and I do that every week anyway.''

Mrs Dore saw there were people in hardship who needed warm, hand-made blankets so she started making a combination of fleece and woollen blankets at the end of last year.

She only sends them to those in the South Island as she would not be able to cope with the demand if she expanded to the North Island.

People from all over the country send her small crochet squares which she then knits together to make the full fledged blanket which she has dubbed "hug rugs''.

It all started with the help of the internet.

"I just started knitting and basically blogging it . . . and the squares started coming in.''

So far, 3366 squares had been donated to her cause.

Every single square showed someone cared, she said.

Squares have also come from as far as England, Thailand, Hawaii and Australia.

"You name [the place], they're all coming in,'' she said.

Mrs Dore takes the blankets and gives them to worthy causes such as the Salvation Army and Women's Refuge.

The Dunedin Red Cross has also placed an order with Mrs Dore for 190 hug blankets to be given to incoming refugees.

Mrs Dore and her crochet-knitting helpers have fulfilled 120 of the blankets ordered.

She raised $71.30c busking yesterday which she would use to purchase more fleece.

She appreciated the generosity of others.

"Complete strangers gift squares every single week and they have for the past 36 weeks solid.''

It was mind blowing that people continued to give because they believed it was a good cause.

She said the response was "knit-alicious'', fantastic and amazing.

She can be found on YouTube by searching "the Nattering Knitter''.

Anyone who wants to give knitted squares should send them to PO Box 1934, Gore.
