Pair with hammer, knife rob Southland dairy

Police are investigating after an Invercargill dairy was robbed by two men armed with a hammer and a knife last night.

The men came into the Pomona St Discount, on the corner of Pomona St and Tramway Rd, about 9.55pm as the dairy owner was cleaning up.

He was threatened by two men with a hammer and a knife about 9.30pm, who are believed to have just taken tobacco and cigarettes.

Police were called by neighbours who heard screaming.

A police spokeswoman said this morning a police dog unit was deployed to catch the men last night, but did not find them.

Police said one man was wearing a blue hoody with white writing, grey track pants with two blue stripes on each side, black shoes and a black peaked cap.

The other was wearing a grey hoody, grey cap with a red peak, and possibly blue overalls, police said.

"Both men, wearing red bandanas over their faces, were described as fair skinned."

Investigations were continuing.

Anybody with information that can assist the enquiry is urged to contact Constable Kieran Miskimmin on 03-211 0498, or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
