Person helped from Invercargill house fire

A person had to be helped from a house fire in Invercargill this morning.

A police spokeswoman said officers and firefighters were called to a house in Ward St, Waverley, about 7.15am.

Emergency services responded after a neighbour called 111 after seeing smoke leaving a house and a fire alarm sounding.

The female was checked by St John ambulance staff, she said.

A Fire Service spokesman said the blaze started after some food was left cooking on a stove.

The fire was contained to the oven, he said.
