Southland Girls' progress: ERO

Southland Girls' High School has reviewed its governance policies and practices after allegations of poor handling of personnel matters, a report from the Education Review Office (ERO) shows.

ERO conducted a special review of the Invercargill secondary school in 2014 as a result of the allegations.

A review in June 2014 did not substantiate those concerns, but ERO recommended some areas for improvement.

ERO deputy chief review officer, northern, Graham Randell said good progress had been made by the board of trustees and staff in addressing the matters.

''ERO would like to congratulate the board and staff for the integrity and professionalism that they have shown in addressing challenging issues.

''Following our recent visit to the school, the ERO team are confident that the steps taken by the board of trustees and senior leaders are well thought out, and likely to result in positive and sustainable outcomes for the school community.

''Trustees have collectively undertaken training about their roles and responsibilities.

''They have reviewed their governance policies and practices in conjunction with staff, contributing to a fuller understanding of what is expected, particularly relating to personnel matters.''

Mr Randell said better knowledge of policies and procedures had encouraged staff and trustees to take increased personal responsibility for knowing school policies and procedures and how to enact these if necessary.

''The principal, senior and middle leaders have greater awareness of their leadership styles, and acknowledge the importance of effective communication strategies in building an inclusive culture.''

School practices and procedures were well aligned to the board's strategic direction and support teachers and leaders to provide positive outcomes for pupils, he said.

The June 2014 Special Review report containing details of the allegations has been removed from ERO's website.

''The substantive review report, dated August 2013, will be the most recent report on our website, until it is replaced by the next review in 2017-18,'' the ERO site says.
