A car was pulled from the surf at Cannibal Bay, near Owaka, yesterday morning after becoming stuck in sand at the weekend.

Police said they had been alerted to a blue Nissan Primera at the popular Catlins tourist spot which had strayed on to soft sand on Sunday afternoon and become stranded.

A local farmer had volunteered to tow the vehicle above high tide mark but was unable to do so until Monday morning, by which time the car had been overcome by seawater.

Further details about the vehicle's owner were unavailable yesterday.
