A train struck the cab of a Fonterra milk tanker stuck on the tracks near Gore early this morning.
The cab of the truck was extensively damaged, but the driver suffered only minor bruising, Gore police said.
''The truck turned to go into a rural property and stopped too close to the train tracks and was unable to reverse,'' Sergeant Clint Wright, of Gore, said.
Sgt Wright said the collision occurred at the entrance to a rural property off the Gore-Mataura highway along State Highway 1 about 1am.
The driver crossed the tracks to enter the property and did not have enough time to reverse to avoid the collision, he said.
There was minor damage to the train.
Police are continuing their investigation.
