Two killed in crash near Gore

Two people are dead and two others are injured following a car crash south of Mataura this afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said emergency services were called about 5pm and State Highway 1 has been closed.

Traffic detours have been put in place at Brydone Rd and the Glencoe Highway.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

She said it was not yet clear how many vehicles were involved in the incident.

One of the survivors remains in a serious condition and is being flown to Dunedin Hospital, while the other suffered moderate injuries and will be taken to Southland Hospital by ambulance. 

The two injured people have been taken to hospital and the Serious Crash Unit has been advised.
